For some stupid reason, I decided to try to get a very optimal Legendary run on New Alexandria. I tried for days to get a really solid run through the randomness of the objectives. I despise this mission now. This run’s route is not perfect, but it was the best I could do amidst all of the resets and the frustration.

Right off the start, I throw a frag at a specific spot on the Falcon. This causes the two marines to try and avoid the grenade while I can fly away without them to hijack a Banshee. It’s much faster than trying to kill them.

Speaking of Banshees, there is a high probability that a pair of them spawn near the Hospital, so I don’t have to hunt any down and waste precious time. If you’re lucky, sometimes the Banshee even flies towards the Hospital while you’re hijacking it.

After that, it’s simply killing the marines fighting the Hunters before going to Sinoviet.

Then, I got the Shade Turrets, another very nice, short side-objective. Vyrant is the same as ever.

The mission finished very nicely as I killed the Shade Turrets. However, I accidentally turned away too early on the 3rd one, so I had to turn back and shoot it one more time. As a result, I ended up being directly above the last one (where I can’t shoot it), forcing me to try to get an angle. That mistake cost me about 5+ seconds alone.

Final time: 7:20. Extremely solid run, but could still use some improvement. The route that I intended to use goes as follows: Hospital, Shades, Vyrant, Hunters, Sinoviet, End. If I or someone else could get a run like that, then this mission could very well go under 7 minutes. It would take an insane amount of resets to accomplish that, however, but I will keep trying. In the meantime,

Enjoy!

It’s not often you get to see improvements of nearly 4 minutes to speed runs, but Zero Shot is a special case where you’re lucky to get runs in at all. So with extreme diligence and a healthy dose of skill, Auraxade cuts the time for New Alexandria down to just 10:19 – an improvement of 3:50!

There is very little time wasted in this speed run (the Banshee for the Hospital skip is collected mid flight like the Legendary run!) so pretty much the only place you could obviously improve is with an easier 2nd side-mission. He gets a little bogged down trying to clear some Covies off a roof to get to another jammer – but as with all Alexandria runs, that’d require even more luck.

In the runner’s own words:

Here is a drastic improvement to RC Master’s Zero Shot run. I felt that it could really have been faster, and here is proof. With some serious dedication and countless failed attempts, I bring you one impressive run of New Alexandria without dying or firing one bullet.

Very nice indeed!

RC Master gets the troopers on New Alexandria to do all the shooting for him, ending up with a 14:09 Legendary Zero Shot run.

Figuring out ways to effectively use the gunners on your Falcon to do all the work for you was quite a fun task. You have to alter your flying style dramatically to get them to hit the targets you want since their range is much shorter than yours.

One of the funnest encounters, for me, was the approach to Vyrant Tower; sweeping back and forth across the entrance, getting the troopers to kill the FRG Shades for me. :)

Speaking of Vyrant, that is also where I lost a lot of time: My gunner got killed as I was rushing in the door so I had to destroy it and call for a new one. Otherwise I would have had zero offensive capabilites at all!

Unfotunately I also got Buck as a side objective which usually accounts for a good minute or two.

As with most Alexandria runs: more luck = more speed.

To celebrate Bungie Day (July 7th) 2012, RC Master decided to run through the whole of Reach on Legendary with 11 Skulls on (No Iron or Blind)! Game time is exactly 3 hours 33 minutes!

As he describes in the intro to the video, this is roughly equivalent to the difficulty you are required to play on for the LASO Weekly Challenges. The video comes in at just under 4 hours (including loading and cutscenes) and you can see him doing it live with a little picture-in-picture view of him – which he uses to provide commentary on the run as he does it.

There are a few deaths during the run (8 in all) but only one costs him any real time and most are just unlucky. None of the individual levels are as fast as the single-level LASO speed runs he and others have done – but these are all back-to-back on the day!

The gameplay on the first level, Winter Contingency, starts 6 1/2 minutes in.

If you don’t feel like watching the whole thing in one go, the timestamps for the various levels are in the YouTube description.

Enjoy! And Happy Bungie Day!

EDIT: Bungie actually left a comment on this video using their YouTube account:

You look spry, my man, and focused. Thanks for playing. You make it look easy.

Cool!

cyph9r has been speed running Reach for close to year (he is the one that found the infamous ‘Banshee Hospital skip’), but has only just recently got XBL to be able to share his runs with the world. He brings us the first Easy difficulty run on New Alexandria. At just 7 minutes 52 seconds, it is also the fastest run of the level, but he assures us he can do better!

In his own words:

I was hanging around a bit too long after the hospital so i could shave a least 20 seconds more off.

Still not a bad time though.

Not bad indeed!

Another Heroic run from RC Master, this time it’s New Alexandria, in a very quick 8 minutes and 2 seconds.

In his own words:

This one doesn’t suck nearly as much as the one I was about to submit.

Turned out pretty much exactly as I would have hoped. Could be optimised by getting closer side-objectives, but the randomness chews up a lot of time.

Insider knowledge grants RC Master the first sub-10 run of LASO New Alexandria. He regroups with Noble at the ONI tower in 9:16.

The level designer for New Alexandria, dmiller, showed up on the HBO forums a few months ago and answered some fan questions. He revealed that the ordering of primary missions and the selection of secondary objectives was in fact entirely random. Additionally, he revealed that the side missions were grouped in 4 categories of missions: Buck escorts, Covenant up to no good, Covenant v. UNSC on the same rooftop, and Covenant v. UNSC on a different rooftop.

Armed with this new insight, I set about improving the times on New Alexandria. I improved it a few times, with this run being the best one.

The major mess-up in this one is the destruction of my Falcon at Vyrant tower. Waiting for that cost me a good 40 seconds which would have put this run very, very close to the Legendary run. Unfortunately this levels randomness eats a lot of time in re-tries so I haven’t been able to make an improvement myself. A tip though: land your Falcon a few metres away from the door – mine exploded to a Plasma grenade that wasn’t even stuck to it, and I think that there is some funkiness around the door attached to that.

Try, try and try again, and you just might get the dice roll you want: RC Master manages to improve Legendary New Alexandria to 8:34 with some lucky objective placement. That’s an improvement of 1 minute and 54 seconds!

In his own words:

I think I said the last time I posted a run for New Alexandria that any further improves would be mostly on getting the objectives to fall in the right order by luck. Well, this run is exactly that: I decided to put in the time to get the game to give me the objectives in the order I wanted (more or less). I managed to cut quite a significant amount of time off, but my luck wasn’t perfect so it’s not as fast as the Heroic run.

This run is undoubtedly much, much closer to what Cyph9r’s* fabled offline runs looked like; which unfortunately we may never get to see, so this’ll have to do for now!

It’s not without it’s new tricks for this difficulty however: In Vyrant I opt to Sprint through (very dangerous!) instead of using the jetpack. Then, at the ONI Tower I take a page that I had added to my playbook during the Heroic run of this and destroyed one of the Phantoms before they got the chance to drop off any Shades.
